Oregon sophomore Aiden Carter is in fourth place after the first day of the decathlon at the Bryan Clay Multis, which began Thursday, April 9, in Azusa, California. Carter finished the opening five events with a total of 4,101 points and is currently third among collegiate competitors.

The event is significant for Oregon track and field as it highlights strong performances from its athletes on a national stage. The decathlon will continue Friday afternoon with the 110-meter hurdles followed by four more events to conclude the competition.

Carter achieved four outright lifetime bests during Thursday’s events: he ran 10.83 seconds in the 100 meters, jumped 7.53 meters (24-8.5) in the long jump, threw 13.14 meters (43-1.5) in shot put, and completed the 400 meters in 49.76 seconds. He also cleared an outdoor personal best of 1.95 meters (6-4.75) in high jump.

Ben Barton from Brigham Young University leads after day one with a score of 4,326 points; Carter Morton from Northern Iowa is second with 4,221 points; and Callum Newby—competing unattached—is third at 4,150 points.

In other results for Oregon athletes on Thursday, Liisa-Maria Lusti did not finish day one of the heptathlon after running a time of 14.36 seconds in her only completed event—the women’s hurdles—but did not start subsequent competitions.

Looking ahead this season, ticket packages are available for Oregon’s home outdoor schedule including meets such as the Oregon Team Invitational on April 17-18 and Oregon Twilight on May 8 before hosting the NCAA Championships in June.
