Illinois defeats Oregon men’s tennis team in straight sets

Oregon men’s tennis lost 4-0 to No. 11 Illinois at the Atkins Tennis Center in Champaign on Friday.

The match began with a competitive doubles round, where all three courts were decided by tiebreakers. Oregon’s Matthew Burton and Pierre Mouesca secured a win at No. 1 doubles, defeating Tyler Bowers and Gabriel Debru 7-6 (7-0). However, Illinois claimed the doubles point with victories at No. 3 and No. 2 doubles, both ending in 7-6 scores.

In singles play, Illinois extended its lead with straight-set wins on courts six, three, and two. Zach Viiala defeated Cameron Burton 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles for Illinois’ second point. Will Mroz, ranked No. 70 nationally, overcame Sam Olszakowski 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3 singles to put Illinois ahead by three points. Gabriel Debru then clinched the team victory for Illinois with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Pierre Mouesca at No. 2 singles.

Three other singles matches were left unfinished when the match was decided. Vlad Breazu was leading Kenta Miyoshi—ranked No. 23—by a set and a game at No.1 singles (6-4, 5-4), while matches involving Matthew Burton and Lachlan Robertson were also ongoing.

After this result, Oregon’s record stands at nine wins and three losses overall.
