Lane County announced on Apr. 23 that a free Household Hazardous Waste Roundup will take place in Oakridge on Saturday, May 2. The event will allow each customer to bring up to 35 gallons of household hazardous waste for collection at the Oakridge Fire Station between 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.
The event is intended to help community members safely dispose of potentially dangerous items such as paint, cleaners, lawn chemicals, car care products, arts and crafts supplies, pool chemicals, and fluorescent tubes. According to the announcement, labels marked with words like solvent, flammable, corrosive, poison, caution or danger indicate items that should be brought for disposal.
Businesses generating small amounts of hazardous waste may participate but must pre-register and pay disposal fees. Organizers say most businesses can save money by using this program instead of hiring private contractors. Schools, churches, government agencies and non-profits are also required to pre-register and may be subject to fees.
Electronics recycling is available at several transfer stations throughout Lane County during normal hours for items including televisions, computer monitors, CPUs, printers, phones and laptops—up to seven items per day per person. Commercial or floor-standing copiers as well as dismantled units are not accepted.
The county says these free collection events are funded by fees collected when residents or commercial haulers bring waste to Short Mountain Landfill or one of Lane County’s fifteen transfer stations.
