The Oregon Ducks softball team set a new school record for runs scored in a single game on Mar. 23, defeating Indiana 24-12 at Andy Mohr Field. The Ducks overcame a seven-run deficit and lost their starting pitcher to injury early in the game before mounting the comeback.

This victory marks an important milestone for the program, as it demonstrates both offensive power and resilience during challenging circumstances. The team’s ability to recover from an early setback highlights its depth and determination.

Head coach Melyssa Lombardi said, “We’ve just talked a lot and we just know that as long as we have innings to work with, we have the opportunity to come back and win. I’ve been saying this for a long time. This is a powerful lineup and you really got to see that today.” Kaylynn Jones contributed with five runs batted in (RBI) including a three-run home run that gave Oregon its first lead of the game. Jones said, “It was fun. I mean, we weren’t expecting that start, but all of our girls were not going to let that determine the rest of the game…I just think it’s great that we can do that and we’re recognizing that.” Lombardi also praised senior catcher Trinity Holden after her first career hit drove in Oregon’s record-breaking 24th run: “I just loved watching her,” Lombardi said.

The Ducks’ offense produced four home runs—two grand slams by Elon Butler and Emma Cox—and set additional records for hits (21) and RBI (23). All nine starters had at least one hit, while Butler led with six RBI. The team tied or broke several individual milestones during this performance.

According to Lombardi, “Resiliency. That’s how I would describe this group…They were having good at-bats, knowing that we were going to find a way to come back and win, to see everybody contribute—not just the starters—but also have Trinity come off the bench…just everybody who came in did something.” Monday’s nonconference matchup was one of only two times Oregon has won while giving up twelve or more runs.

Looking ahead, Oregon will begin a three-game series against Northwestern on Thursday at The Ballpark at Rosemont.
