The Oregon men’s tennis team secured a 4-2 victory against Purdue on March 15 in Eugene, improving their home record to 10-0 this season.
The match began with Oregon claiming the doubles point. The No. 1 pair, Matthew Burton and Pierre Mouesca, narrowly defeated Nour Fathalla and Henrik Villanger in a tiebreaker, winning 7-6 (7-3). Cameron Burton and Lachlan Robertson sealed the doubles point for Oregon with a 6-3 win over Juan David Velasquez and Jacob Lee at No. 3 doubles. Purdue’s Nikola Jovic and Maj Premzl earned a win at No. 2 doubles with a score of 6-1.
In singles play, Oregon clinched the overall match by securing three victories. Mouesca won in straight sets at No. 2 singles against Villanger, finishing 6-2, 6-3. Matthew Burton came from behind to defeat Velasquez at No. 4 singles, posting scores of 5-7, 6-2, and 7-5. Russell Soohoo also rallied for the Ducks at No. 6 singles to beat Jovic in three sets: 3-6, 6-1, and 6-4.
Purdue managed two singles wins during the contest. Fathalla overcame Vlad Breazu at No.1 singles after dropping the first set but recovering to win the next two sets: 2-6, 6-3, and 6-2. Lee added another point for Purdue by defeating Robertson at No.5 singles with scores of 6-4 and 6-1.
The final match between Oregon’s Sam Olszakowski and Purdue’s Premzl was left unfinished when Olszakowski was leading in the third set as the overall dual had already been decided.
