Lyndsey Grein and Taylour Spencer led No. 18 Oregon to a 4-0 win over Northwestern on March 27 at the Ballpark at Rosemont, combining for a one-hit shutout that evened the series between the teams.
The result is significant as it follows Oregon’s loss in the first game of the series, demonstrating what coach Melyssa Lombardi described as resilience from her team. “We’ve talked about being resilient and I’m really proud of the way our team responded tonight,” said Lombardi. “We didn’t like how things went in game one and these guys came together and were not going to be denied tonight.
“Certainly Taylour and Lyndsey were great on the mound and the defense stepped up behind them and the offense came through with some timely hits and kept the pressure on their pitchers,” Lombardi said.
Grein started for Oregon, retiring all six batters she faced in two innings before Spencer took over in relief, striking out six over more than three innings while allowing just one hit. Grein returned later to finish out the final five outs without allowing another baserunner. The only scoring threat for Northwestern occurred in the fourth inning when they managed a walk and an infield single, but Spencer struck out two batters to end that opportunity.
Oregon’s offense contributed runs across several innings. Emma Cox drove in Taryn Ho after an error allowed Ho to reach base, Elon Butler doubled for her 200th career hit, Amari Harper tripled home Butler, Stefini Ma’ake added a sacrifice fly, and Cox delivered another RBI with a foul out that scored Elyse Kresho following another defensive miscue by Northwestern.
The Ducks also tied their school record with their 25th sacrifice fly of the season—a mark set previously in 2015—while individual milestones included Grein entering Oregon’s top ten for career strikeouts (359), Jones reaching her 100th career hit, Butler leading Big Ten doubles (14), and Harper recording her first triple of this season.
Oregon concludes its road trip with a series finale against Northwestern scheduled for Sunday.
