The Oregon softball team advanced in the NCAA Regional after defeating Idaho State 5-1, according to a May 15 announcement. The Ducks overcame an early deficit and were without ace pitcher Lyndsey Grein, who missed the game due to an eye infection.
This win is significant for Oregon as it demonstrates their ability to adapt and succeed despite roster challenges. Head coach Melyssa Lombardi said, “If you look at this entire year, we’ve had to take on strain at different times of the year. To watch these guys do that for her, we knew these guys were ready to go, but we’re going to be even that much more ready to go knowing that they’ve got a teammate that was down tonight.”
Taylour Spencer and Elise Sokolsky combined efforts on the mound, limiting Idaho State to one run. Ayanna Shaw hit a grand slam in the fourth inning which proved decisive for Oregon’s offense. Shaw said, “I would say probably for all of us that’s how we felt. I mean, we all know we’re going to score. It’s just a matter of when.” Sokolsky entered in relief during the fourth inning and retired all eleven batters she faced, ending with a strikeout that energized the home crowd at Jane Sanders Stadium.
Sokolsky described playing in front of local fans: “It’s just such a blessing to be able to have our fans come out and support us like this. I know there’s very limited schools that get to experience this, and I don’t think there’s any other schools that experience it like we do here at the Jane. I mean, we call it the Lion’s Den for a reason.” Lombardi added about Spencer’s performance: “We gave up one run in the first inning; you know it’s going to happen, but what I love is how she got out of the jam and she just got better as every inning went.”
Other notable moments included Emma Cox driving in another run with a sacrifice fly—the team’s 37th such play this season—and Shaw hitting her second career home run.
Looking ahead, Oregon will face Mississippi State next as they continue their postseason campaign. Lombardi concluded: “I think our mindset stays the same… We talk about being 1-0, and we take it one game at a time… when we have all three cylinders firing, this group is tough.”
