Springfield Medicaid billing for Medicine Services and Procedures climbs to $6.2 million in 2024

In 2024, Springfield’s Medicaid providers billed $6,202,600 for Medicine Services and Procedures, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Medicaid Provider Spending data. This figure shows a 9.8% uptick from 2023, when $5,647,121 in claims were filed for this service type.

Medicaid, which is managed by states and funded by both federal and state governments, insures millions of low-income families, seniors, children and residents with disabilities—making it a core part of the country’s health care system.

Since Medicaid funding traces back to taxpayers, fluctuations in local claims reflect how health care resources are deployed in each community.

The “Medicine Services and Procedures” group refers to Medicaid-billed services based on established HCPCS and CPT code sets. For this report, every billing code fell into one defined service group using consistent code prefixes and numerical spreads in order to combine similar services and ensure accurate rankings through the years while avoiding duplicate counts.

While overall Medicaid expenditures rose across categories, Medicine Services and Procedures was the second-highest ranked service by total Medicaid payments in Springfield in 2024.

Statewide in Oregon, the Medicine Services and Procedures group held third place for Medicaid payment totals for the year.

Springfield’s Medicaid payments for Medicine Services and Procedures climbed by $2,055,442, or 49.6%, in the five years leading to 2024. Some years saw quicker rises, particularly in 2023 and 2020.

Though Medicine Services and Procedures services were billed citywide, the majority of payments were linked to a small number of ZIP codes. In 2024, ZIP code 97477 reported $6,202,599 in connected Medicaid payments. Collectively, the leading ZIP code represented 100% of all spending under the Medicine Services and Procedures group that year in Springfield.

Within the category, most Medicaid payments were concentrated in just a handful of billing codes.

Between 2024 and 2023, Springfield saw a 9.8% rise in Medicaid payments for Medicine Services and Procedures, versus a 0.5% change among all Medicaid claim categories citywide in that period.

According to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, combined Medicaid spending by federal and state governments totaled roughly $871.7 billion in fiscal year 2023. This represented about 18% of total U.S. health expenditures and was a considerable increase from approximately $613.5 billion in 2019, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The difference signals close to 40% growth in a few years, primarily due to expanded program enrollment and increased utilization during and after the pandemic.

The “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” enacted in 2025, is estimated to reduce federal Medicaid funding by over $1 trillion over 10 years and introduces changes including work requirements and higher cost-sharing that could impact coverage and funding for some recipients. As a result, states may bear increased costs while federal Medicaid expansion is slowed, even as the program continues to cover tens of millions of Americans.
