University of Oregon issued the following announcement on Feb. 28.
Dr. Anna Hejinian assumed the role of medical director for University Health Services in February, replacing Dr. Richard Brunader, who retired at the end of January.
“She is an excellent clinician and a dedicated and trusted leader at UHS,” said Deb Beck, executive director of University Health Services. “Under her leadership, she will ensure quality medical programs and services that allow UHS to elevate our expertise in college health care.”
In her time at the UO, Hejinian has been instrumental in restructuring how health services are delivered on campus, combating the global pandemic, and providing holistic health care to the UO community. She also serves as an LGBTQIA+ ally and champions the advancement of diversity, equity and inclusion on campus.
“It is enormously gratifying to practice medicine with patients who are rigorous and demanding when it comes to equity and inclusion, with a shared responsibility to be socially conscious in our campus community,” Hejinian said.
“Dr. Hejinian’s breadth of medical experience and commitment to the health and well-being of our students is vital to their academic and personal success,” said Roger Thompson, vice president for student services and enrollment management. “Her dedication to expanding the health care needs of our diverse UO community will serve to advance the mission of University Health Services.”
Hejinian wants University Health Services to be known on campus as the go-to place for physical and mental health care. Whether it is preventive care, primary care, acute illnesses and injuries, or counseling services, the clinic specializes in college health and understands the challenges faced by students.
“Young adulthood is probably the most intense time in a person’s life. There is so much happening — physically, emotionally, socially,” Hejinian said. “I am enormously grateful every day to be allowed into the lives of our students.”
Hejinian joined UHS in 2014, first serving as a relief physician before becoming the associate medical director. Prior to joining the UO, Hejinian served as a part-time physician and full-time mother to two boys, both of whom are now Ducks.
