Eugene Police Department issued the following announcement on Apr. 18.
On April 16 Eugene Police received several calls regarding the same disorderly subject, later identified as Jason Speed McLaughlin, age 49, harassing people and businesses in the area near The Dining Room, 270 West 8th Avenue.
At 1:17 p.m., Eugene Police received a call regarding McLaughlin harassing individuals near WOW Hall. He was reporting to have been approaching people who were waiting around outside of the WOW Hall for a concert later in the evening, pulling a knife on two young males (who left the area quickly), and taking a victim’s cell phone briefly before the victim got it back.
EPD officers contacted McLaughlin in front of the Dining Room. McLaughlin was initially compliant when handcuffed, and then subsequently began to fight, headbutting, rearing back, and trying to twist away. He was escorted to a patrol vehicle and during this, he grabbed a police officer’s handgun. The officer retained the handgun. McLaughlin struggled as he was being secured and shouted threats to officers. He was transported to Lane County Jail and lodged on the following charges: Attempted Theft in the First Degree (Firearm), two counts of Disorderly Conduct, Harassment, and Theft in the Second Degree.
