Eugene Police Department issued the following announcement on Apr. 24.
On April 23, at about 11:00 a.m., Eugene Police responded to the area of 16th Ave. between Patterson and Hilyard Streets regarding a large, unruly party with open alcohol consumption, that had spilled out into the street and adjoining properties, blocking the roadway. During the event, glass bottles and metal canned food items were hurled at officers as they tried to disperse the large crowd. Shortly after 1:00 pm, the crowd was mostly dispersed by officers. Officers remained in the general area to intercept and prevent other similar events and activities from getting out of control.
Following the conclusion of the Oregon Football Spring Game, officers were assigned to the West University area for focused party patrols as activity began to increase in the evening. Similar behaviors, to include drinking and parties forming were observed. Eight officers and two sergeants were called in on overtime to staff a response in the area, due to the behavior and events earlier in the day. This allowed patrol to operate under normal conditions to handle calls for service across the rest of the city.
During the focused patrol time, officers issued 22 citations for Minor In Possession- Alcohol; and five Open Container citations in lieu of custody. Additionally, six house parties with 200+ attendees were contacted prior to becoming out of control, and voluntary shut down their events. Residents were reminded of the Unruly Gathering (Social Host) Ordinance and possible civil and criminal consequences that may result (see included link for additional information). Officers also intervened in breaking up a fight involving multiple subjects in the street and had two different incidents where subjects contacted ran from police.
