Mayor Vinis: Statement on shooting in Colorado Springs

I am saddened and heartbroken to hear of the shooting at an LGBTQIA+ venue in Colorado Springs. Though the motive for the shooting is still unknown, the attack took place where members of the LGBTQIA+ community gather, a place where they feel safe and accepted.

Tragically, the shooting took place on the eve of National Transgender Day of Remembrance, a day that honors the lives that were lost in the past year to anti-transgender violence. In a proclamation I signed recently, the City of Eugene continues to uphold the dignity of all individuals and ensure that acts of neglect and violence toward any segment of the population will not be tolerated. We support the LGBTQIA+ community, both locally and around the world, and we reaffirm our commitment to ensuring diversity, social justice, equity and mutual respect throughout our community.

My thoughts are with the victims, their loved ones and the LGBTQIA+ community in Colorado Springs. At the City of Eugene, we stand firm against any form of hate or discrimination.
