On Wednesday, February 15, Eugene Springfield Fire (ESF) accepted a $20,000 donation from the University of Oregon Gamma Pi chapter of the Pi Kappa Alpha (PIKE) fraternity. The tremendous donation was a result of a firefighter challenge fundraising event that PIKE held in November 2022. The donation will fund peer support training for 30 ESF firefighters. Peer support is an effective tool in supporting firefighter wellbeing through one on one counseling. Additionally, PIKE’s donation will help support fire safety education events at ESF stations later this year. PIKE also made a donation to ESF in 2021 that funded lighting equipment for fire investigations.
“This donation will help improve ESF’s ability to care for our firefighters ensuring all tools are available to address their mental health needs as they serve the community,” said Fire Chief Mike Caven. “Proceeds from the PIKE donation will also go to engaging open houses at fire stations, improving access and fire safety education opportunities throughout the community. We are honored by the support the members of Pi Kappa Alpha have provided to our community in recent years.”
