Fire suppression crews will continue to monitor the site of the Moon Mountain fire through the weekend to look for any flare-ups or hotspots. Park staff are working to assess the extent of the damage and any remaining hazards.

Please do not visit the park until we have completed these assessments. We will share updates as we can and let you know when it’s safe to visit.

The majority of the fire occurred on upland prairie, burning grasses and low vegetation. Even though it burned quickly, it likely burned at a lower temperature than if it was in a dense forest with bigger fuel loads. We are hopeful that there is minimal damage to the unique habitat that makes Moon Mountain so special.

Even though it was a relatively small fire, the circumstances (windy, hot weather, steep terrain, poison oak and blackberries) made the response no easy task. We are so appreciative of the agencies whose swift work helped extinguish this fire fully in just a few days, protecting the habitat and neighboring properties from serious damage.

In the coming months, Park staff will be working on a plan for restoring the site. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
