Parks and Open Space is excited to announce that the opening of Eugene's first dedicated mountain bike trail, Pipe Dream. Trail building volunteers and City staff officially opened the trail last Friday with a small ceremonial ribbon cutting and inaugural rides.
Pipe Dream is an intermediate trail rated blue in Amazon Headwaters Park, not recommended for beginners. The .6 mile trail was built by volunteers from the Eugene Mountain Bike Stewards and Disciples of Dirt, as well as Parks and Open Space staff and the City's levy-funded seasonal trail crew.
Pipe Dream takes off from the multi-use section of the Ridgeline Trail between the Fox Hollow and Dillard West trailheads, winding its way through the forest down to the end of Center Way. Unlike most trails in the Ridgeline, Pipe Dream is surfaced primarily with native soil to provide a better mountain biking experience. The trail is designated as a downhill only mountain bike trail and will be closed to pedestrians and uphill traffic to ensure the safety of all.
Construction of the trail began in the fall of 2021 with the clearing of vegetation and debris from the trail alignment. This process included a volunteer event to salvage native plants, which were replanted at Spencer Butte park by the Obsidians. Throughout the winter and spring volunteers built a new section of trail, sculpted banked turns, rollers and drainage features, and improved an existing section of trail. City Parks staff built a number of retaining walls to stabilize the new trail and worked with the levy-funded seasonal trail crew to gravel a muddy section at the bottom of the trail and build a rock garden at the start of the trail.
